COLUMBIA, SC – Benedict College Director of Athletics Willie Washington has been selected to the NCAA Division II Basketball Committee.
“This is a big honor to be selected to serve on the NCAA Division II Basketball Committee,” Washington said. “Division II has some excellent men's and women's basketball teams and I look forward to do whatever I can to help promote Division II basketball.”
Washington will begin his four-year term on September 1.
During his time as Benedict's athletic director, Washington has served on several NCAA committees, including the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Committee, the NCAA Honors Committee, and recently concluded his term on the NCAA Division II Management Council.
Washington spent 11 years as head basketball coach at Benedict, where he guided the Tigers to the NAIA national tournament four times and was named EIAC Coach of the Year eight times. He was inducted into the EIAC Hall of Game and Benedict College Athletic Hall of Fame for his coaching success. As Director of Athletics, he guided Benedict from the NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1999 and expanded the athletic program from eight to 14 sports, including the return of football.
