For the past 10 years, the Palmetto Capital City Classic has been the ultimate Historically Black College and University (HBCU) football experience that brings fans together from across the state of South Carolina and the Southeast for a fantastic weekend of fun and football.

The tenth annual Palmetto Capital City Classic football game will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011 at the Charlie W. Johnson Stadium in Columbia, S.C. The Classic is more than a football game. It is a six day experience filled with events including a golf tournament, a high school band challenge and pre-game parade. Over the past nine years, football teams from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and West Virginia participated, and this year the Classic welcomes a team from Virginia - The Virginia Union Panthers of Richmond, Va. as they take on the Benedict College Tigers.

On Thursday, September 1, 2011, Islam Shrine Temple #1 & PCCC is sponsoring the Old School Fish & Shrimp Fry Featuring World Famous Johnny Green from 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at The Gamecock Pavilion, 1127 Bluff Road. Garnell McDonald Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, September 2, 2011 with a 9:00 a.m. Shotgun Start . The cost for individual Golfer’s fees is $85.00, while team fees are $340.00. The tournament will be held at LinRick Golf Club at 365 Camp Ground Road, Columbia, SC. Later that evening, Friday, September 2, the Palmetto Capital City Classic Presents Deep in Jazz: Featuring the Legendary Maysa and All-Star Band. This event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person or $500.00 for a VIP Table of 8 and are being sold exclusively at the PCCC Office. You’ll want to call (803) 758-5946. The concert will be held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center at 1101 Lincoln Street, Columbia, SC.

On Saturday, September 3, game day festivities start out with the annual Palmetto Capital City Classic Parade, with the route to the stadium beginning at Drew Wellness Center. Parade begins at 10:00 a.m.

Benedict College will face off with Virginia Union College at 3:30 p.m. at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium. Tickets for the big game are $15, $20 and $25 and are available at the PCCC office and all ticket outlets. While the game promises to entertain and excite, you don’t want to miss The Battle of the HBCU’s & Special Half-Time Show!

The Classic’s primary mission is to generate revenue for scholarships and financial support for HBCUs by highlighting the educational and athletic endeavors of its participating HBCUs through quality athletics, academic programs, sportsmanship, and school pride.

Pepsi Beverages Company, based in Columbia, SC is one of the sponsors of the event. As a sponsor, Pepsi is participating in the annual parade on Saturday morning, and it will host a Hydration Stand filled with Aquafina and Gatorade to hand out product to our troops who attend the event on September 3, 2011 as game between Benedict College and Virginia Union kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Pepsi’s participation in The Classic is a demonstration of its commitment to the communities in which it operates.
